But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. I'm a fan. I don't have high expectations for Mexican food in West Virginia being from SoCal, but this place is good. The chips & salsa are addicting, as they should be. The tacos de pescado are second in Charleston to tricky fish. But that's tricky fish's specialty, so this place does well for it just being another thing on the menu. The Texas quesadilla is STACKED. Shrimp, chicken, steak, cheese, bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, pico, lettuce, sour cream, Mexican rice, beans, & seasoning grilled & STUFFED in a tortilla. You mos def don't eat this shit with your hands, bust out some utensils for this beast. Margaritas are the best in town, & draft beer prices aren't bad.

My wife could eat Mexican everyday from this place. I love it, but I like to try other Mexican too. Try as I might, we can't find a better Mexican food joint in the valley. Mexican Shoneys sets the bar by which we measure every other Mexican restaurant. It's good, it's consistent, it's family friendly, the staff is great, the service is fast. We usually have lunch: half order of chicken nachos (for her) and fajitas taco salad add spinach and mushrooms (for me).

I went here on a date and I was pleasantly surprised at the authentic Mexican meal. I haven't had authentic Mexican food since I lived in Los Angeles years ago. The staff is friendly and keeps your drinks filled and checks on you often. It is a friendly family atmosphere. It's usually pretty busy.

A.K.A. "Los Shoneys" - so named because it's in a former Shoney's building - is an above average Mexican joint. All the standard fare plus a new spate of fusion dishes like a Mexican Cheeseburger (burger + egg = chorizo + pico, etc) or a big baked potato covered in beans, chorizo, steak, what have you. Nice, family friendly atmosphere but enough going on to keep the adults entertained, i.e. good tequila selection and decent beer options. The chips are free and the house made picante that goes with it is cilantro-riffic, which I like but 20% of you will think tastes like Dawn dishwashing liquid. Pepsi, no Coke. Also a plus in my book. Well worth a stop. Not the best Southwest/Mexican food in the valley but plenty of flavor for your dining dollar.

A great local Mexican place. Fast service. Also great takeout. Love the Mexican omelet with chorizo. I've always had good a good experience here.

I do NOT like Mexican food. Period. But Los Agaves has a salsa that will make your taste buds sing! They also have a guacamole that they prepare table side that is delicious, and I have yet to order a margarita there that was anything short of delicious. The service is always great, too. I usually order the quesadillas hongos (mushroom quesadilla). The price is great, too, especially for a city.

More like Gross Agaves. This is typical for Mexican restaurants in the area, the food is quick and the service is rapid, trust me you will never die of dehydration in a Mexican restaurant in WV because they must earn money off how many times they fill up your soda, even if it is almost completely full. If only they paid as much attention to the cuisine. It doesn't really matter what you order here it will be a meat in some tortilla served with rice, beans, pico, cheese, sour cream, lettuce, and "guacamole salad". I think their version of guacamole must have gotten lost in translation. Not fresh. Not good. If you are looking for an inexpensive, unfulfilling dining experience where you can soak up cheap margaritas then run to gross agaves, but if you are looking for authentic Mexican food avoid this place.

We opted for Los Agaves from the highway over a national chain. The Burrito Tampico had a flavorful sauce with a nice kick; my wife got the chimichangas which I ended up finishing as well. The food was delicious and the patio, partially covered, was a great atmosphere on a nice evening.

In Charleston on business, got a carryout for my wife and I - delighted with everything from the excellent quality, authenticity, and modest prices. Two entree dishes, a couple of ala carte items, guacamole side, chips and salsa side - $25 out the door. We will be back when in town!

One of the better Mexican Places In Charleston Really good Mexican Food. Great Service Great Salsa, cheese dip Excellent Fried Ice Cream and the best Churritos I have ever had.

Really slow service and medicore food waiter was really nice but food was less than acceptable no seasoning at all had to be sent back...then it was better. Still decent place but if thier packed with people i suggest moving along.

Went on Friday evening, very busy small wait time. Food was great, marquaritas was great. Service started out slow and then he tried to make up for it by bringing our dinner out right after he served the appetizers, I mean we didn't even really had chance to start on it. But all in all it was a nice dinner out

Decided to try this place because it had been recommended to us a number of times, big mistake, went at lunch, lunch specials were very limited, and most all were ground beef only. Rice was dry, beans were flavorless, the bf ordered a margarita, he said it was ok, but very sweet and hardly any tequila. Out biggest complaint was the service, waiter was rude and seemed irritated to be there, he was annoyed when we asked for more salsa, and just walked away when we asked for more chips, though they did appear about 5 min later, def will not be back, Rio Grande has this place beat by a lot.

The fish tacos were delicious, but you have you to build them yourself. They are brought to the table as fish fillets in a white flour tortilla. A separate plate holds all of the toppings.

Had the fajitas mexicanas, it was really delicious. You have to ask for more tortillas, but it was really good. Came here on a Friday night and we got a table and our food came out in a timely manner, which really impressed me. But then, we always enjoy eating here.

Great fun spot with good food! Margaritas are great - portions are big - service is fast and you will always see someone you know! Also fast for lunch - good lunch menu - try the chicken soup!

Awesome food, great atmosphere, try the fajitas for two and the frozen strawberry margaritas. Jose the waiter is a HOOT !!!

Nice and clean with a great patio area. Food comes in large portions except the burritos (baby size, two should do). Carnitas is always a winner.
